From the end of the Paleo-Indian period and continuing into the early Archaic period, the stone projectile points commonly known as the Dalton Point served as a hunting weapon more than almost any other Style.
This durable technology has been used over a large region from the Southeast and Florida in the east of the Central Kentucky and Tennessee and Ohio, over the South and in much of Texas, and in the northern Great Plains.
A similar, possibly related to the way it was in the same period, used in the Great Basin, west of the Rocky Mountains in the desert Southwest, California and the Pacific Northwest. It is called the Humboldt Point.
Dalton Points are in Missouri, Arkansas, Joint, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, etc. The striking design is divided based on the spear points, spear heads and dart Points is far and instantly recognizable.
This design, probably more than anyone else replaced the grooved points of the previous technology because it worked! And because the old craftsmen did not fight so many breaks, which occurred regularly during the fluted point manufacturing process. This change saved a lot of Effort, time and materials, all of which are used somewhat better than have been filed Clovis, Cumberland, or discarded Folsom points "broken during manufacture."
A unique phase of the Dalton-point system created. Since the points were used and was bored, either from hunting or effects of edge wear in operation, such as blades, is the owners raise them.
This redevelopment effort taking place normally would, while the point still attached to the handle or shaft. As a result, the base has the point does not show much trouble with the redesign. But the blade is certainly not show the effect is sharpened again and again.
I have a display that shows 8 different old Dalton points. They are arranged around a white chert Dalton blade, 3-1/2 "long action of the wide 1-1/8". It has again sharpened several times, and shows the typical one-sided sharpening flake removals along each edge of the blade, giving it a bevelled edges visible on the left side the blade. The other 7 points are equal to or slightly smaller in width at the base, but they are all much shorter, usually under 2 "long.
They were all reground many times. In fact, they have been "recycled" so many times that there is almost nothing left of them except the base, with only a short piece of triangular Blade left. They all have at the end of their usefulness, so that would further sharpening more effort than it was worth. Then threw the Dalton era Users these tools, knives and projectile points, without a second thought.
Therefore, they are "post-consumer – Dalton."
